Background
—————
I was born in the Rift, Kenya, a place surrounded by stunning natural beauty. My life has been an adventure of its own—I’ve grown up in different places, which has given me a diverse perspective on life and culture. I currently am in Nairobi, where I live and work.

What motivated you to start travelling and seeking new adventures?
—————
I believe the love for traveling and adventure has always been a part of me—it just took some time for me to fully discover it. Looking back, I remember how much I enjoyed going on school trips as a kid. Those experiences sparked a sense of curiosity and excitement that stayed with me, even if I didn’t realize it at the time. Maybe that’s where it all began unknowingly, and over the years, I’m glad I still have it in me.

What has been your favourite travel destination so far, and why?
—————
My favorite travel destination so far has to be Lamu, Kenya. There’s something magical about this place that’s hard to put into words. One of the most unforgettable moments was going on a traditional sail at night {no engines}, gazing at the stars in silence which felt like a dream. The sunrises and sunsets were absolutely breathtaking. Has a special place in my heart

Can you describe a challenging experience you faced while travelling, and how you overcame it?
—————
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve had a truly challenging experience while traveling because, for me, every experience is an opportunity to learn. Somehow, I always manage to find a solution. One thing I’ve struggled with is language barrier. One time at the Uganda border when the officials had an issue with my tent, they couldn’t clearly explain what the problem was, and I couldn’t articulate my response well either which was slightly frustrating,

What unique cultures or traditions have you encountered that left a lasting impression on you?
—————
I haven’t had the chance to do many cultural trips yet, but I’m incredibly fascinated by the richness of different cultures and traditions. I’m particularly keen on visiting the Hadzabe tribe in Tanzania and the Omo Valley tribes in Ethiopia. I’d also love to attend the Lamu and Turkana cultural festivals here in Kenya. These experiences are on my bucket list, and I can’t wait to experience that.

How do you choose your travel destinations, and what factors influence your decisions?
—————
When choosing travel destinations, my budget is the first thing I consider—I need to know it’s something I can afford. Bucket list places always take priority for me. Things like weather rarely influence my plans. I could enjoy a beach vacation while it’s raining because I absolutely love the rain! For me, it’s all about the experience and making the most of wherever I go.

Have you ever tried something completely new on your travels? What was it, and how did it go?
—————
Solo camping in a foreign country. The first time I did it was in Tanzania at the foot of Mount Meru, and I absolutely loved the experience. It gave me such a sense of freedom and connection to nature that I was more than okay doing it again in Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda. Both experiences were incredible and taught me so much about resilience, independence, and the beauty of being surrounded by nothing but nature. It’s now something I always look forward to doing whenever I can.

What new activities or experiences have you tried on your travels that you would recommend to others?
—————
One thing I’d recommend to everyone is to try doing it solo—whether it’s a camping trip or a luxury getaway. Don’t wait on people. There’s something incredibly liberating about being on your own, making your own decisions, and fully immersing yourself in the experience whether its nature or culturally.

How do you balance spontaneity with planning during your adventures?
—————
For me, balancing spontaneity with planning really comes down to affordability. It’s important to avoid situations where you might get stuck in an unfamiliar place without the financial means to sort things out, like buying a bus ticket or handling unexpected expenses. While I love the thrill of deciding on the spot to visit a new destination, I always take a moment to look up a bit of information online. It doesn’t have to be a deep dive, but even a quick search can provide useful insights and help ensure the adventure goes smoothly.

What lessons have you learned about yourself through your travels?
—————
Through my travels, I’ve learned that I’m confident, independent, and brave. I’ve also realized that no matter what situation I find myself in, I always somehow find a way to sort things out and get myself through it. Traveling has shown me just how resilient and resourceful I can be.

How do you engage with local cultures and communities during your trips?
—————
I am always eager to learn something new about people and cultures everyday. If given the chance, I immerse myself into their way of life—it’s such an intimate way to connect with people. I also make an effort to be as respectful as possible, dressing appropriately and honoring their customs.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about starting their own travel journey?
—————
My advice? JUST START. Don’t wait on people to join you or for the perfect occasion—if you have the means to do it, go for it! Taking that first step is the hardest part, but once you do, you’ll realize how rewarding it is to explore, learn, and grow through travel. The journey will be worth it, and you’ll never look back with regret.
