Chasing Hidden Gems

————-

‘In this interview, Kristel Kite reflects on her childhood by the coast of New South Wales and her deep love for the outdoors. As a solo traveler, she enjoys exploring hidden gems through kayaking and freediving. Now transitioning from café owner to van life, Kristel plans to travel Australia, starting with the Daintree Rainforest and ending in Tasmania, all while embracing spontaneity and the freedom of adventure.’

Background

————-

I spent my early years on the Central Coast of New South Wales, near Terrigal, Wamberal, and Forresters Beach, always close to the ocean. My mum, a hardworking single parent, fostered my love for nature through countless camping trips, bushwalks, and beach days.

When we moved to Noosa Heads at age 10, that connection only grew. My dad lived in Sunshine Beach and my mum in Coolum, so I was always surrounded by beautiful coastlines. Heavily involved in Nippers, I embraced every opportunity to explore. My upbringing truly shaped my love for adventure and discovering hidden gems.

For those getting to know you for the first time, could you share your current outdoor interests and what you enjoy most about them?

————-

I’ve been living life independently for over 14 years, and I’ve found so much joy in solo travel. Exploring remote places and hidden gems, like camping under the stars or hiking in solitude, is where I feel most at home. I’m drawn to adventures like kayaking, freediving, and discovering waterfalls off the beaten path. Lady Musgrave Island, with its vibrant marine life, especially the green turtles are a personal favourite.

My love for spontaneity means I’m always ready for a new experience, whether that’s a planned trip or a last-minute decision to explore. I’ve journeyed solo through Asia, including Vietnam, Thailand, Burma, Singapore and lived on Lord Howe Island, which has only deepened my connection to nature. My journey is all about finding incredible places and sharing them with the world.

Can you share with us how you manage your day-to-day life while also getting outdoors and exploring?

————-

For most of my life, I’ve been immersed in hospitality, especially in Noosa Heads, where flexible hours let me balance work and adventure. Over the past decade, I’ve owned my own businesses—a coffee wagon and later a café—which gave me afternoons and weekends free to explore the Sunshine Coast. Now, I’m preparing to sell my café and fully embrace life on the road, traveling Australia in my van, sharing hidden gems, and living out my adventurous dreams.

With your new life in mind, do you have an idea of where you would like to begin your journey and the general route? And what, if any, are your concerns for the road ahead?

————-

I’m kicking off my adventure by heading north from the Sunshine Coast, diving into the lush Daintree Rainforest and exploring Mossman Gorge. I’ll be soaking up the beauty of the Barrier Reef and all the hidden gems along the way.

From there, my journey will take me to the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region, where I plan to immerse myself in the rugged landscapes and rich culture.

After that, I’ll make my way down the west coast, exploring places like the Pinnacles, Esperance, and the stunning coastal drives.

I’ll loop around the southern coast, experiencing the diverse landscapes and vibrant communities, all the way to Tasmania.

I love the freedom of the open road and embrace the spontaneity of travel. I don’t have any specific concerns; I believe in facing challenges head-on and enjoying every moment of the journey.
